Remove the dirt- Wear gloves, and reach your gutters using a ladder to inspect them. If you notice there is dirt, remove it and wipe your gutters clean.
Check the downspouts- Inspect the downspouts to ensure they are not clogged. If they are blocked, they can prevent the water from flowing through leading to mildew in the gutters. Check the rivets joining the downspouts tighten them if they are loose.
Inspect the Spikes- Spikes hold the gutters in place from the outside edge to the roof. Check if each of them is fastened well. Also, replace or tighten broken or loose spikes.
Are the gutters leaking? Check for holes and cracks in the adjoining area/caulking. Mark the areas properly with a marker, clean properly, and remove debris and old caulking. After drying fill the damaged parts with silicone.
Clean with a pressure washer- After clearing the gutter and checking its firmness use a pressure washer to clean it thoroughly. Consult the manufacturer's guide on how to use the washer. Take the opportunity to look for leaks you may have missed.
Clean during spring and fall –The two seasons are the best to clean the gutters after the leaves have dropped. Get rid of debris that has accumulated to ensure the gutters are clean and potential damage is reduced.
Ensure the ladder is safe- Place it on a flat surfacefor your safety. Gutters are weak and can be easily damaged when your entire weight is placed on the ladder. Let the upper edge lie below the gutters to protect them from damage.
